Alleviate stress with a calming skincare ritual

Skincare is self-care, and your skin is a reflection of your mental, physical, and spiritual health. The use of organic plant-based skincare will nourish, hydrate and restore your skin. But when you bring intention and mindfulness into your skincare practice, you'll begin to notice other positive benefits way beyond the surface - that of your mental health and wellbeing.

Understanding stress

'Fight or flight' is the body's natural response to stress and can be a positive thing. When faced with a stressful situation, your nervous system floods your body with adrenalin and you experience physical symptoms such as sweating, palpitations and heightened awareness. Other bodily systems such as your immune and digestive systems temporarily shut down as your body deals with the perceived threat.

The problem with modern day stress is that we encounter enormous amounts of chronic stress on a daily basis that our body simply cannot handle. From finances, relationships, health, work, the list goes on. This persistent low level stress results in elevated levels of the stress hormones cortisol and adrenalin and is destructive to our overall health, affecting the cardiovascular, endocrine, musculoskeletal and immune systems.

Bringing in a skincare ritual

A simple skincare ritual can be a positive step towards lowering stress levels as our brain will react similarly as if we were to experience a facial or a massage. Touch is of vital importance and incorporating such a practice allows the parasympathetic system to take over, reducing cortisol levels and generating a sense of calm and well being.

A ritual also allows the mind to take a break from incessant inner chatter and to focus on the present moment. Some people find it difficult to do absolutely nothing. A regular skincare ritual can be the perfect compromise.

The Merkaba three step ritual

You may wish to set an intention, particularly if it's at the beginning of the day. This can bring about a sense of purpose and clarity. Lighting a candle or burning incense can also add to the overall experience.

Begin with 'Balance', our facial cleansing oil to remove daily impurities, makeup and dead skin cells.

Cleansing can be an act of letting go and releasing thoughts and feelings, such as self doubt or fear that are not in service.

Massage 3-4 pumps onto the face and neck area for 1-2 minutes. Not only is facial massage an expression of self love and acceptance, it also increases circulation and promotes the lymphatic system's natural detoxification process.

After massaging, gently press a warm, soft cloth, such as this one, over the skin to remove excess oil and to provide a light exfoliation. Warm water creates steam and further adds to the experience.

'Refresh', our facial hydrating mist is then sprayed onto the face and neck area. Take a few deep nurturing breaths as you inhale the aromas of sandalwood, jasmine, vetiver and geranium essential oils. This stimulates the olfactory system and can further ease symptoms of stress and anxiety.

After cleansing and hydrating, apply a serum such as 'Restore', our anti-aging or 'Soothe', our ultra calming serum depending on skin type and goal. Both of these products, packed with powerful plant actives, vitamins and antioxidants are perfect for ultimate nourishment.

Gently massage 2 - 3 drops to the face and neck area in slightly upward circular motions while the skin is still damp. By slowing down here, you allow yourself the emotional and physical space to be fully aware. Massaging the oils into your skin also offers connection to the life forces of the plants and as you replenish your skin, imagine you are replenishing your energy. It's a perfect reminder to give back to yourself all that you give to others.
